Farther or Further

Which is okay, or are they the same?

  1. FARTHER is used for physical distance: He ran farther today than yesterday.

FURTHER is used for figurative (figure of speech/symbolic) distance: Let’s talk further.

Professor Paul Brians says some people use them interchangeably, but that can be a slippery slope. http://public.wsu.edu/~brians/errors/farther.html
