Very curi­ous

Why do you use an en dash after the first word in your sus­pended hyphen­ation exam­ples? You then use a hyphen in the sec­ond phrase. E.g.: Some style guides, like APA, have a four– and five-letter rule. Capitalize all prepo­si­tions of four or five let­ters or longer. Thank you.
