Using Abbreviations

When I use common abbreviations in an article, do I need to write the explanation of the abbreviation?

  1. If there’s the slightest chance that a reader might not understand the abbreviation, then it would be courteous to put the full name right next to it — in parentheses. If you’re using the abbreviation more than once in the article, it’s only necessary to define it the first time. This is not the same as when writing a book.
